Basket Weaver
Rwanda

My name is Rose. I am 36 years old. I am married and I have 4 children, 3 of which are in secondary school. I learned how to weave 4 years ago. Before I started weaving I had a down life because it was hard to get food for my children every day.
My husband was a bicycle driver and I stayed at home every day to take care of my children. It was very difficult to feed our children and buy their clothes and life insurance. Even though my husband had a job he gained low income which could not satisfy our home needs. After learning how to weave from my neighbor for five months, I went to the weaving cooperative and began producing baskets.
My life has improved because I get good income. I buy fruit for my children, pay their tuition fees, and buy their clothes. I also receive a loan from our cooperative to purchase some livestock, like chickens. My dream is to get money in the future so that I can build a big house and pay the high education of my children.
Weaving changed my life and I thank our customers for their support. I am able to fulfill my responsibilities as a mother of my children. I know how painful it is to be poor, but for now my family and I are happy because our lives have improved.
