Basket Weaver
Rwanda

My name is Maria. I was born in 1978. I am married with 3 children; one girl and two boys. I never had the chance to go to secondary school because my parents were not able to pay my schools fees. This broke my heart because I would see all of my friends going to school while I stayed home. So then I decided to learn how to weave baskets from my girl friend at the age of 18. It didn’t take me a long time to learn because I was committed and I saw that it was the only way to improve my life and plan for my future.
My husband also has a job as a bicycle driver and makes a small income. His income combined with the income I get from selling my baskets is transforming our life and has empowered us to fulfill our children’s needs and send our children to school. Being a member in my cooperative has helped me develop friendships with other weavers.
I am very proud of my job as a weaver, and with my job I am able to save some amount so that I can plan to build my own house and continue supporting my children until they finish their studies in university. I am grateful for all the people who buy our baskets. May God bless you because you help us improve our lives and for that I hope that the future is going to be brighter for us and for our children.
