Basket Weaver
Rwanda

My name is Emmanuellia. I am 34 years old. I am married with four children, three of them are in primary school and the other one is in secondary school. I began weaving 10 years ago. Before starting weaving I had a miserable life because every day was a struggle to get food for my children. I didn’t get a chance to go to school, and my life was hard without a job.
My husband was a farmer and I stayed at home every day to look after my children. It was very hard to feed our children and buy their clothes and life insurance without any income. I learned how to weave from my neighbor for 4 months, and then I went to the weaving cooperative and started producing baskets.
When I started weaving I received some income, and from that income our life and nutrition began to improve. I smile when I meet other women, and I am able to buy clothes for my children. From that income I received a loan from our cooperative for buying land and some livestock.
For now I have chickens, and from those chickens I have eggs that I sell. My dream is to save money so that in the future I might build a big house and pay the high education of my children.
With weaving my life changed and I thank our customers because with their support I am able to fulfill my responsibilities of being a mother to my children. I know how sad it is to lack food for your children, but for now I am happy and I thank God because he did so many things for my family.
