Basket Weaver
Rwanda

My name is Dativa. I was born in 1979. I am married with 4 children; two girls and two boys. I stopped my studies when I finished primary school because my parents were not able to pay my schools fees. This broke my heart because I would see all of my friends going to school while I stayed home. I decided to learn how to weave baskets from my neighbors when I was 17 years old. It didn’t take me a long time to learn because I was committed and I saw that it was the only way to improve my life and plan for my future.
My husband is a farmer and he makes a small income. His income and the income I get from selling my baskets are transforming our life and have empowered us to fulfill our children’s needs, pay health insurance, and send our children to school. I love working in my cooperative because it helps me develop friendships with other weavers. The money I have saved through selling my baskets has helped me buy 2 goats.
I am very proud of my job as a weaver and with my job I plan to build my family a house and continue to support my children until they finish their studies in university, because they are still in secondary and primary school.
I am thankful for all those people who buy our baskets. May God bless you so much because you help us to improve our lives.
